He studied Czech and Russian at the Faculty of Arts in Brno. From 1950, he worked there as an assistant and subsequently held the position of head of the Department of Czech Language, Slavic and Indo-European Linguistics (1963–1984), and also served as vice-rector. He was an external head of the branch of the academic Institute for the Czech Language in Brno and a member of the editorial boards of professional periodicals (e.g., Slovo a slovesnost). His work was focused on Bohemian studies with a broad comparative scope. He transitioned from descriptive synchronic dialectology (Středoopavské nářečí, 1953) to historical dialectology and the history of Czech in general. He examined Czech in comparative Slavic contexts and broader genetic connections. He dedicated a synthetic monograph to historical phonology, Vývoj fonologického systému českého jazyka (1966, 1968). He compiled the sum of knowledge about the development of Czech into the textbook Historický vývoj češtiny (1977) and Historická mluvnice češtiny (1986; together with J. Bauer and D. Šlosar). He produced material results in the field of Proto-Slavic (Praslovanština, 1987) and theoretically extended from the Indo-European phase to the Nostratic phase (in collaboration with M. Čejka). He also paid attention to issues of language culture. His work continued the traditions of the Brno school of dialectology and comparative Indo-European studies. Methodologically, he was based on the structural conception of language and the phonological principles of the Prague School, which he creatively elaborated and developed.
