prof. PhDr. Bohuslav Havránek, DrSc.
(* 1893 – † 1978)
He studied Slavic, classical, and Indo-European philology in Prague. After his habilitation in Prague, he took over the leadership of Slavic philology at the Faculty of Arts in Brno in 1928, where he also served as dean (1939–1945). After 1945, he moved to Charles University in Prague. He was one of the founders of the Higher School of Russian Language in Prague. He held important and leading positions not only at the university and the academy but also in the editorial boards of central journals and in teams working on collective grammatical and lexicographical works. He was a co-author and the main editor of the Slovník spisovného jazyka českého (1960–1971). He engaged in intensive scientific organizational activities outside the republic as well, notably as an influential member of the International Committee of Slavists. His research focused on Slavic linguistic comparative studies and Paleoslavistics, as well as individual Slavic languages (Genera verbi v slovanských jazycích, 1928 and 1937). However, the largest part of his scientific work is in Bohemistics. It is oriented both synchronically and diachronically, addressing both the literary language and dialects. Among his major synthetic works are Nářečí česká (1934), Vývoj spisovného jazyka českého (1936), and Česká mluvnice (various editions; with A. Jedlička). He was one of the founding members of the Prague Linguistic Circle and a co-creator of its linguistic theory and methodology. Since the end of World War II, he has been an internationally recognized leading figure in Czech linguistic Bohemistics and Slavistics.
