He studied classical and Germanic philology and Indo-European comparative linguistics at the Faculty of Arts in Brno, where he remained after graduation as a member of its seminar for Indo-European comparative linguistics. He was a member of the editorial board of SPFFBU and the editorial board of the Publications of the Faculty of Arts. In 1996, he was awarded the Josef Dobrovský Gold Medal by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. He worked as a researcher in the field of general and comparative linguistics and published many specialized studies, compendiums, and teaching texts in these scientific disciplines, such as the textbook Základy jazykovědy (1984), and teaching texts for Sanskrit and Lithuanian. Besides general Indo-European studies, he created significant works in Indology and Baltic studies (Struktura indoíránských jazyků, 1980; Baltské jazyky, 1984). He also made substantial contributions to Slavic linguistics (and through it to Bohemistics, especially etymology). In 1995, he became the chief editor of the Etymologický slovník jazyka staroslověnského. Erhart's studies are methodologically on par with the linguistic theory of contemporary currents in historical-comparative linguistics and are inventively based on the consistent application of a holistic structural view of the phenomena studied.
