prof. PhDr. František Trávníček, CSc.

(* 1888 – † 1961)

He graduated in Bohemian and German studies from the Faculty of Arts in Prague, but after his studies, he returned to Moravia in 1921. He was a professor of the Czech language at the Faculty of Arts in Brno, where he focused on both the historical development of Czech and its contemporary state, as well as Czechoslovak dialectology. He served as the dean of the Faculty of Arts and, from 1948 to 1959, as the rector of Brno University. He was not only a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences but also the chairman of its linguistic section. He left behind an extensive body of scientific work in linguistic Bohemian studies. He wrote partial monographic studies and extensive synthetic works on the Czech language throughout its historical development, from Old Czech to the contemporary language in both its literary and dialectal forms, covering phonetics, grammatical structure, lexicology, and lexicography. Among his notable works in the field of dialectology is Moravská nářečí (1926); in the field of contemporary language studies, the two-volume Mluvnice spisovné češtiny (1948–1949); and in the diachronic scope, Historická mluvnice československá (1935). He was also a co-author with P. Váša of Slovník jazyka českého (1937) and with B. Havránek of Pravidla českého pravopisu (1957). He paid significant attention to issues of language correctness and culture, problems of teaching the mother tongue, issues of orthoepy and spelling, and Czech stylistics, such as Spisovná česká výslovnost (1935). His findings in the field of synchronous Czech syntax, especially historical, have lasting significance, building upon the stimulating concepts of J. Zubatý.
