prof. PhDr. Petr Karlík, CSc.
(* 1951)
A graduate in Czech and German from the Faculty of Arts in Brno, where he has been engaged in research and teaching for over 40 years. He primarily focuses on issues of Czech syntax, including the relationships between morphological and syntactic categories. In his scientific work, he combines theoretical approaches of generative grammar with his own modified valency theory, thus reaching the level of micro-syntax and nano-syntax descriptions.
Professor Karlík is a member of the Humboldt Foundation, various academic committees, and editorial boards (Slovo a slovesnost, Zeitschrift für Slavistik, Studies in Computational and Theoretical Linguistics). His extensive publication activity includes around 150 scholarly articles and books, such as Skladba češtiny (1998), co-authored with Professor Grepl, which has long been a cornerstone for university-level syntax studies. He also contributed to and edited collective works such as Příruční mluvnice češtiny (1995) and Kapitoly z dějin české jazykovědné bohemistiky (2007). As the principal investigator of a project, he led the work of nearly 200 leading domestic and foreign linguists in the preparation of Nový encyklopedický slovník češtiny (2016), the most extensive contemporary compendium on Czech, awarded the Dictionary of the Year title in 2018. In the realm of scientific organization, Professor Karlík organized five editions of the significant Bohemistic conference Čeština – univerzália a specifika (1998–2003). An important part of his university activities, besides research, is working with students, especially doctoral students. Many current academic professionals have benefited from his scientific training, drawing not only on his expertise but also on his exceptional openness to all new research impulses.
