prof. PhDr. Marie Krčmová, CSc.

(* 1940 – † 2023)

Professor J. Hrabák's daughter studied Czech and Russian, as well as expansion phonetics, at the Faculty of Arts in Brno. After graduating in 1962, she worked at the dialectological branch of the Academic Institute of the Czech Language in Brno. In 1971, she transferred to the Department (later Institute) of the Czech Language at the Faculty of Arts in Brno. She was then tasked with establishing the Institute of Linguistics and Baltic Studies, of which she took the lead from 1995 to 2004. She began her scientific career as a phonetician. From deep dialectological training emerged her works examining the transformations of the national language and sociolinguistic studies (with particular attention to the urban speech of Brno, including Běžně mluvený jazyk v Brně, 1981). She also focused on Czech stylistics: she co-authored numerous collective works, including Kapitoly z dějin české jazykovědné bohemistiky (2007; also as co-editor) and Současná stylistika (2008). She also dealt with didactic issues, co-authoring high school textbooks and university teaching materials (Úvod do fonetiky a fonologie pro bohemisty, 2006). She consistently dedicated herself to popularizing linguistics and issues of language culture. She significantly contributed to the creation of the Nový encyklopedický slovník (2016), as the author of individual entries in the fields of phonetics, stylistics, and language culture. She was a prominent scientific and pedagogical figure, and her expertise influenced many contemporary academic professionals.
