The Department of Czech Language at a Conference in Cambridge
The international phonology conference Old-World Conference in Phonology, hosted by the prestigious University of Cambridge, welcomed a strong delegation from the Department of Czech Language. Poster presentations were given by Anna Stolařová (Native phonology shapes the perception of non-native voicing contrasts: an experimental study) and Anna Poĺomská (Palatalization is a lexically triggered phonological process operating at multiple levels).
Oral presentations were delivered by Markéta Ziková and Martin Březina (Morphological effects in phonological change: The shift from trapped to syllabic liquids in Czech), and by Lucie Braunerová (Evidence from dichotic listening suggests that gaps in initial RT clusters are accidental, a collaborative project with T. Scheer, M. Lemaître, M. Ziková, and A. Poĺomská).
The conference and accompanying workshop, held from 13 to 16 January, impressed participants not only with their academic content but also with their atmosphere – more than once, attendees could not help feeling that the next speaker might well be Professor McGonagall.
