Synchronic linguistics

Česká verze

Synchronic studies are focused on modern formal approaches towards grammar (generative grammar and generative phonology). Students in seminars held every week (taught in turn in Czech and in English) get on the basis of specific data acquainted with current theories as a part of Principles and Parameters (cartography, nanosyntax, government phonology, distributed morphology). The focus is on frequent consultations with the supervisor and on integration of the individual students into a group in which they can meaningfully cooperate. In addition to regular classes, so-called “syntax reading group” takes place regularly, in which selected articles relevant for current research are discussed. Besides the scholarships, there is also an effort to establish positions for Ph.D. students in research projects. At the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, main teachers in this study group of doctoral studies are Pavel Caha and Markéta Ziková.

The Department of Czech Language is, ion Czech conditions, a centre of busy international cooperation. In the past two years, the following guests (to mention just some names) from abroad held their lectures, some of them for a longer time:

  • Gillian Ramchand
  • Guido Vanden Wyngaerd
  • Jonathan Bobaljik
  • Marcel den Dikken
  • Michal Starke
  • Rajesh Bhatt
  • Susi Wurmbrand
  • Tarald Taraldsen
  • Tobias Scheer
